Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. The Lincoln funeral in CHICAGO. 7 stereoviews recording the procession and other funerary elements around the city.

7 stereoviews on yellow mounts, all uncredited. Includes:

A rare view of the triple arch at 12th street, designed for the funeral by W. W. Boyington, and through which the hearse would pass as it entered the city. Uncredited, but attributed by consignor to Carbutt. A more popular view of this arch shows the hearse passing through it, accompanied by a procession of young ladies in white dresses. Here, a group of soldiers are visible behind the arch, likely waiting for the hearse to arrive. -- A view of the Cook County Court House decorated for the funeral. A group of people stand on the street corner nearest the camera, and in the distance, a large line of mourners can be seen filing into the court house entrance to view Lincoln's body. Faint pencil inscription on verso reads, "State House Chicago / Lincoln's funeral." -- And 5 views of Lake Street showing the funeral procession as it progresses westward toward Clark Street. All taken from the same (nearly identical) vantage point at the corner of Lake and Clark, but capturing different parts of the parade. -- Together, 7 stereoviews.
